What, when, where in SW1

Background info

The South Westminster Action Network (SWAN) is a community alliance which brings together residents and the statutory, voluntary and business sectors to improve services and opportunities in south Westminster. Continuing the spirit of the South Westminster Renewal Partnership (2004-2011), SWAN concentrates on improving the quality of life for households most in need, residents living in social housing (council and housing association properties) and hostels. It also contributes to the general economic growth and social cohesion of the area.

A Neighbourhood Plan for SW1 was developed by the South Westminster Renewal Partnership with local organisations. It was a three-year plan (2008-2011) setting out residents’ issues and priorities and how we will tackle them to make south Westminster a better place to live and work in. The south Westminster area covers the Victoria, Pimlico, Millbank and Westminster neighbourhoods in SW1 and we aim to improve the quality of life for those most in need.

Our vision is for south Westminster to be a great place to live and work in, with opportunities for everyone to share in all that the area has to offer.

Our seven long term aims for south Westminster are:

  • To reduce crime and the fear of crime though visible and accessible community safety work (Safer SW1)
  • To have a clean, attractive and well maintained neighbourhood, with plenty of public green space and adequate and accessible transport links for the local community (Local Environment)
  • To give everyone access to decent, affordable, well managed housing (Housing)
  • To enable residents to live longer and healthier lifestyles by promoting healthy living, wellbeing and life enhancing activities and ensuring access to local NHS health and support services (Health & Support)
  • To make south Westminster a vibrant and popular place to live, with a strong and united community (Leisure & Community)
  • To provide a range of co-ordinated services and opportunities to engage children and young people in positive activities and enhance their life prospects (Children & Young People)
  • To enable all residents to meet their learning and employment aspirations and to have a strong and vibrant local business community (Opportunity)

We want to give residents the opportunity to influence the way services are delivered in their neighbourhoods and we will make sure we’re involving all the right local services to enable this to happen.
