What, when, where in SW1

Background info

South Westminster has been prioritised as a neighbourhood renewal area, because some communities fall within the top 20% most deprived parts of the country.

A South Westminster Renewal Plan has been developed, setting out a vision and priority issues which need to be addressed to make the area a better place to live and work, providing opportunities for the whole community.

The Renewal Plan is informed by a study undertaken in 2003 (to identify the needs of local residents and gaps in services) and by community consultation. In six distinct areas, it sets out how services can be improved locally to;

  • Ensure leisure and community activities meet the needs of residents
  • Reduce crime and the fear of crime
  • Provide accessible training and employment opportunities for the whole community
  • Improve educational attainment and access to lifelong learning opportunities
  • Enable individuals to enjoy their best possible health
  • Improve housing conditions and the local environment.

The plan builds on the work of a group of committed individuals from local voluntary and community organisations known as the South Westminster Community Network. A South Westminster Steering Group oversees delivery of the renewal plan. The group has representatives from a range of organisations who deliver key public services in the local area. There are also a number of different sub groups focusing on specific such as Housing, Youth provision, learning and employability and the planning for SouthWestFest and SW1 Radio.

These groups have come to be collectively known as the South Westminster Renewal Partnership, organisations which are committed to work in partnership to make the area a better place to live and work.
