Expert services

Some expert services are available to support people with specific needs into training and employment. For example, extra help is available for people with disabilities, young people and people without permanent accommodation. The ‘expert services’ can often support individuals all the way from thinking about work, into getting and keeping a job.

The Centre works with homeless young people, badly housed families, refugees, asylum seekers and migrants helping them to obtain employment and break out of the cycle of homelessness and social exclusion. Services include Employment advice; IT training; English classes for speakers of other languages; Family Services for those with pre-school aged children; a 32 bed hostel for young homeless people, an 8 bed hostel for people in recovery from substance misuse problems; the Medical Surgery offering drop-in GP, nurse and counselling services; advice on housing, and immigration; a full financial inclusion programme including debt management and benefits advice; a wide range of volunteering and mentoring opportunities and a very well-known charity shop. All new clients are given a full assessment of their needs.

Westminster City Council’s Family Information Service (formerly the Children’s Information Service) offers free, impartial information and guidance on children and young people’s services in the City of Westminster.
This includes Nurseries, childminders, out of school hour’s clubs, activities for children and young people, help with childcare costs, starting a career in childcare, and assistance with returning to work and training. H.E.L.P. operates various outreach surgeries across Westminster, providing support, advice and guidance to people wishing to access employment and voluntary work or learning and training opportunities.
Those eligible for the project are people living in temporary accommodation provided by Westminster Housing Options Service (HOS), people newly approaching the HOS as homeless and people on the HOS Family Quota waiting list.

An Advisor works on a one-to-one basis to provide support with the following:

  • Job hunting/ research into the local labour market
  • Completing application forms and interview techniques
  • Assisting in searching for and applying to local education providers
  • Preparation of c.v.s
  • Looking for suitable volunteering opportunities

Jobs in Mind Work Solutions Service 020 7428 5999

For those who are experiencing stress related and/or mental health difficulties which are affecting you at work, Jobs in Mind offer support, advice, information and guidance to enable you to retain your employment or look for alternative work.

For individuals who have experienced difficulties around your mental health, they offer support and advice about finding work, or with accessing training, education and volunteering opportunities.

Migrants Resource Centre works with and for migrants and refugees. It provides: courses in English and computing; general advice with specialists working in immigration; opportunities for volunteering; creche provision for students and others on a drop-in basis and a voice for migrants and refugees in the wider community.

UCanDoIT is a charity that teaches people with disabilities how to use computers on a one-to-one basis in their own homes. The UCanDoIT course usually consists of 10 lessons and covers mainly internet and email skills including searching, shopping, joining groups and forums. The aim is for learners to use these computer skills to enhance their independence and to enjoy being part of a wider community. All our Tutors have CRB clearance. UCanDoIT is a registered charity and charges just £5 per lesson for learners on a low income and works on a sliding scale for those on higher incomes.

Westminster Centre for Independent Living work with deaf and disabled residents who live in the borough of Westminster and provide the following: IT training; healthy lifestyles; employment advice & guidance; information and advice service; CAB service; aromatherapy; hydropool; internet cafe. Referrals are either via care managers or self referrals.

The Employment Service @ WCIL is a free service for deaf and disabled people who live in the Westminster borough and are of employment age, between 18 - 65. They offer: 1-2-1 advice and guidance; CV surgeries; confidence building workshops; employer engagement; consultancy for employers (if employers are worried about a disabled or deaf person applying for a job and don't know the best form of recruitment); advice for disabled volunteers/ those who wish to volunteer; workshops in finding your perfect job (interview skills/ application forms/ budgeting/ decision making); job club; expert advice for people with disabilities. Projects for the future include: how to set up your own business and youth led activities for the over 16's.

Westminster Employment (WE*) 020 7641 1500

Westminster Employment (WE*) is a specialist employment service dedicated to assisting and supporting people with learning disabilities, physical disabilities, mental health issues, substance or alcohol abuse and young offenders by providing advice and guidance to help people find and keep work.

They offer a range of support including; CV creation; work taster sessions; work experience placements; regular job searches and job matching; help completing application forms; interview preparation; conviction disclosure letters; job coaching sessions (on-the-job); confidence building; and training of and problem solving with employer’s if required.

The Youth Hub on Lupus Street provides a one stop shop for young people aged 13 – 19 years old. The advisors provide information and confidential advice to young people referred through schools, the health service, the council and voluntary organisations because they need help and support on issues such as health, education, teen pregnancy and anti-social behaviour.

The council's Children's Services department has changed the way it delivers services to young people aged 13 - 19. The Connexions Youth Service and Youth Crime Prevention Service have come together and are now called Locality Young People’s Services to provide young people with one centralised service at Lupus Street Youth Hub.
